Science
At The Milford Academy, we believe that it is imperative to develop the minds of young scientists by sharing important, key knowledge and vocabulary to our pupils. We believe that a high-quality science education provides the foundations for understanding the world around us. Science has changed our lives and it is vital to the world’s future prosperity and sustainability. Through building up a body of key knowledge and concepts, pupils should be encouraged to recognise the power of rational explanation and develop a sense of excitement and curiosity about the world they live in. They should be encouraged to understand how science can be used to explain what is occurring, predict how things will behave, and analyse their results.
Science plays a crucial role in our understanding of the world around us Our Geography topics link to our Science topics, so children can understand that what we learn in the classroom helps us understand our own environments as well as those around the globe. Our science teaching helps us to prepare children for life, through experiences and exploration of the world in which they live. Children discover, explain and develop skills of enquiry through working scientifically.
We aim to deliver a Science curriculum that blends this knowledge alongside the five enquiry types: observation over time, comparative and fair testing, pattern seeking, identification and classification and research. We aim to encourage excitement and curiosity throughout each lesson to encourage each child to understand the world around them from a scientific perspective.
Each child will leave Milford with the hope that the children have managed to acquire the following skills as Scientists:
- Showing a real love for Science
- Come to a deepening understanding of scientific concepts
- Seeing themselves potentially having a job in Science
- Being able to share rich, scientific vocabulary
- Be confident observers
- Be curious, critical thinkers
- Show an ability to develop and test hypotheses
- Be able to ask scientific questions and discuss ways to find solutions
- Be confident to take risks
- Be able to prove, record and explain findings
Please have a look at the documents below that outline, in detail, the Science curriculum our pupils experience.
