Harvesting our Leeks

Back in the Autumn term we planted some leeks with Anna, our gardener. We have been watching them grow and decided they were big enough to cook the Giant’s supper.

We wanted to make Leek and Potato Soup so we had to prepare the vegetables before cooking them.

When the soup was cooked there was only one thing to do….

…… after all the Giant had fallen down the beanstalk!!

Explore Learning Mathematicians’ Award – The Team Challenge

Before Christmas, all year 5 children took part in an Explore Learning maths investigation at The Milford Academy. Two members of the Explore Learning mathematicians team came in to school to deliver sessions. From these sessions, four children were selected by the visitors who had impressed them with their investigative and problem-solving skills.

Children spent the day with children from secondary schools and tackled more maths problem solving questions. Their tasks involved building pyramids using matches and boxes.

The children loved their afternoon and were keen to tell the cohort all about their challenges!

Year 5 Gardening

This half, during our gardening session, we further developed our understanding of the life cycle of plants by discussing asexual and sexual reproduction.

Children had the opportunity to assist asexual reproduction by planting bulbs and take cutting from rosemary plants.

The children thoroughly enjoyed the experience and seeing what they had learnt in the classroom outside in nature! Miss Groves and Class 11 loved the smell of rosemary so much that we brought some back to our classroom!

Re: Year 5 and 6 Trip to The National Holocaust Centre and Museum – Friday 13th March 2020

As part of our World War II topic, we have organised a visit to The National Holocaust Centre for the children in Classes 11, 12, 14 and 15 on Friday 13th March.  The Holocaust Centre promotes an understanding of the roots of discrimination and prejudice and we feel that this trip would be extremely valuable to your child/children.  All content discussed will be suitable for primary-aged children.

As we need to leave school promptly at 9am, the children will need to be in school for 8.30am. If your child is late to school they will be unable to attend the trip. We should be back at school in time for home-time.

Your child will need a packed lunch for the day or alternatively one can be ordered from the school kitchen.  Please let your child’s class teacher know by Friday 28th February if your child requires a lunch from school.

We have tried to keep the cost of this trip as low as we possible and therefore school will be covering the cost of £715 for the coach to and from the Holocaust Centre. We would like to ask you for a voluntary contribution of £7.00 per child to cover the cost of the session at the centre. Please bring any money in a named envelope or alternatively you can pay online through Parent Pay. If your child is entitled to free school meals there will be no charge however a contribution towards the cost would be greatly appreciated.

If you have any queries about the trip, please do not hesitate to contact your child’s class teacher.
